Cranking Widgets

I’m still working it out when it comes to planning college stuff this week, so I’m a little scarce. I’ll have some major details up later this week.

This is Difficult

I spent the last weekend going though mail, CollegeBoard, and Princeton Review doing searches, comparison charts, and calendaring my August college visits, but I keep coming back to one issue: Tech school v. general school.

Through Facebook, conversation, and this blog, I’ve been thinking about the pros and cons of each type. At this point, I’m still iffy on my major, with thoughts of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics. Hell, I even think about teaching and journalism (new media, tech stuff). Note the term iffy. For all I know, I could attend a technical school, start programming in the dark, and hate it. Then, I’d be in a world of hurt, surrounded by tech-heads. People keep bringing up to me that students at a technical school aren’t exactly ‘intellectuals’. Can anyone combat that claim? It’s not an easy pill to swallow.

This Friday the 10th, I’ll be visiting the University of Connecticut, with tour guide Kyle, member of Exposay. Also, Wednesday the 15th, I’ll be paying RPI a visit. I’ll announce more visiting dates as they’re decided.

Feedback, folks, concerning: Majors, tech v. general, financial aid, anything. I’d really appreciate it.

Hard-Core Plasma Pong

Everyone loves Plasma Pong, it’s just a fact. So, for the last day of the Computer Hardware class at the Academy, we cannibalized parts from everyone’s computers to drive four displays for some Plasma Pong mayhem.

Wisdom Tooth

If you’ve seen me or conversed with me in the last week, you know I’ve been suffering from intense wisdom tooth pain. Unfortunately, due to my work schedule, I wasn’t able to see an oral surgeon until today, Saturday. As I type this, I’m sitting in front of my MacBook feeling exactly how I felt all week, awful. Why, you ask?

Apparently another medication I’m taking suppresses my body’s ability to heal, so I’m unable to have my inflamed mouth operated on for four or months or more. Great! Fortunately, I was prescribed a medicated mouthwash to help my mouth, and I should be back to ‘normal’ in a few days. Unfortunately, somewhere around Winter or Spring break, I’ll have to go have oral surgery on four wisdom teeth at once.

Moral of the story? I suppose everyone should be hyper-aware of the medications they’re taking.

Ten Mile River Flood

I put together a three minute movie about the flood of the Ten Mile River in Wingdale last April. Check it out. It’s nothing fancy, I just wanted another project to work on in iMovie. It’s now listed on the Exposay Movies Page, with my other creations.

One Button?

Today, my final day at the Academy (more on that later), I bought in my MacBook Pro to show off OS X to all of the PC lovers. I met resistance everywhere, even from the most intelligent students. While we were outside during lunch, one proclaimed:

Macs are so cheap, they only have one button mouses!

Before combatting the deeper issue here, there are two mistakes I must point out. The plural of mouse is mice. Also, Macs most definitely aren’t cheep.

I promptly whipped out my MacBook Pro and showed them how my trackpad works. I opened TextEdit, and typed a few words. I double clicked on one of those words, highlighting it. Then, I held down two fingers on the trackpad and clicked, evoking a contextual menu. For those of you who don’t know, a contextual menu is the expected response to a right click.

I don’t need two buttons. It’s simplified design.

Of course, I couldn’t sway any opinions. To quote Barack Obama:

Values are faithfully applied to the facts before us, while ideology overrides whatever facts call theory into question.
