The Storm Without Calmness

The weather forecast for my town:

Periods of snow, mainly after 10am… Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

That’s a lot of snow that I’m not looking forward to shoveling. The problem with a snow day of that magnitude is that it isn’t a day off… it’s a day of work. In my case, I’ll be doing more work on Friday at my house than I would have at school.

A day off would be nice to do some admissions work. I’m finishing up my final essays for my Tufts supplement. Once that process is over, I’ll submit my Common Application. I know it’s down to the last minute, but life has a way of getting in one’s way every once in a while.

Looks like I won’t be Disc Jockeying on Friday night.

Whilst Harry Potter is in a league of its own, that The Golden Compass came in nowhere near even the first Lord of the Rings and made just $4 million more than Eragon is worrying. Indeed, Slashfilm call the numbers a “disaster”. Cinematical say it has “crashed and burned”, writing that “with muted buzz at best, expect Golden’s numbers to plummet next weekend, especially with a new crowd of pre-Christmas contenders packing in, and total domestic box office to top out at around $80 million. Ouch.”

Industry blogger Nikki Finke calls it a “bomb” and a “flop”, citing also low per screen averages. Paul Dergarabedian at Media By Numbers, a tracking firm, says “It’s below expectations, but it’s not an out-and-out debacle.” News agency Reuters’ headline on the matter is “Golden Compass disappoints at Box Office”.

“It’s a little bit disappointing,” said Rolf Mittweg, president and chief operating officer of New Line’s worldwide distribution and marketing operations. The Guardian reports Mittweg as saying exit polls were favourable and that he was hoping word of mouth would help the film in coming weeks, especially with school holidays starting. “It’s all about longevity,” Mittweg said.

Looks like we won’t be getting a The Subtle Knife. I’m very sad.

Scholarship Search Secrets

Today, Christopher Penn’s Student Loan Network launched its Scholarship Search Secrets eBook. It’s a 35 page document of scholarship hunting goodness. Some cool guy is quoted on the page saying:

A must-have document for any student – high school or college. There are some fairly technical tools that can unlock the scholarship process. If you don’t know how to use them, you’re missing out. This ebook clearly explains them.

Snow Day?

My school called a snow day today. Unfortunately, it’s not one of those wake-up-to-see-a-winter-wonderland snow days. It was just a layer of ice covering the roads. If I was younger, I would be celebrating right now. I woke up after a two-hour delay, got dressed, and then checked the school website after being prompted by my sister.

Seeing that school was closed, the first thing I thought to myself was that my Student Council meeting today was canceled, and how disappointed I was. I’ve come so far. Snow days now make me angry rather than joyous, not due to missed class, but to canceled meetings.

Admissions Update

I’ve been a busy guy recently. Having taken my SAT2 in chemistry a week ago from today, I await my scores with fright (December 20, not 29). I’m tidying up my essays for MIT, and have one essay left to be written (Tufts supplement). After those tasks are finished, I’ll submit my Common Application and MIT application online. The paper portions of my MIT application have been mailed, and my other school’s papers will follow early this week.
