Feedback Time

I just had a huge week in terms of blogging. I wrote two lengthy articles: A Dover Dilemma, and US News and World Report, Media Literacy and Social Media. On both posts, I got some awesome feedback in the comments; although I usually address feedback like this with followup comments, many of these thoughts deserved to stand out.

Read on to see the comments and my responses. Continue reading ‘Feedback Time’

Twitter and IRC Antics with Jason Calacanis

I was just listening to Leo Laporte record TWiT on twit.tv/live and stuck around afterwards in the IRC chat room. Marketing maven Jason Calacanis was hanging out and I saw the perfect opportunity to make a joke.

[19:47] Exposay: jasoncalacanis is sitting around wondering how to market to us all

[19:49] jasoncalacanis: exposay: are you saying i would market to people as the CEO of www.mahalo.com and a blogger at www.calacanis.com with an RSS feed of www.calacanis.com/rss.xml? next thing you’ll say I’m trying to get folks to sign up for www.twitter.com/jasoncalacanis !

[19:49] jasoncalacanis: really

[19:49] Exposay: jasoncalacanis, after that, I think you owe me, Richard Mondello of http://richardmondello.com/ a follow on twitter at twitter.com/rmondello/ because I’m a huge fan.

[19:51] jasoncalacanis: exposay: done!

Awesome. Ego inflation in action via twitter.

Ted Demopoulos on Effective Internet Presence

Just listened to a great interview on the Financial Aid Podcast that dealt with managing one’s online presence. The information is great, and I recommend that every online citizen, especially those who are on the job market, take a listen. It’s about eighteen minutes long.

PhotoBook

PhotoBook is a Facebook photo browser for Mac. It makes it easy and fun to manage, share, and view your friends’ Facebook photos in one intuitive interface.

Mac users just have to try this application. It’s a great example of web services crossing over with desktop applications. I’m looking forward to more social applications like this. My favorite other mac desktop applications leveraging facebook include Facebook Exporter for iPhoto and FacebookSync.

Facebook Phishing

This was posted on my Facebook wall, twice, tonight:

lol i cant believe these pics got posted….its going to be BADDDD when her boyfriend sees these- http://absenturlforyourprotection/

The person who allegedly wrote it was only an acquaintance. The real url went to something like “facebook.com.blah.blah.cn”. An obvious phishing attempt. The post I left on the person’s wall tells the story:

I barely know you, but there’s something you must know.

In the last 24 hours you posted this on my wall:
“lol i cant believe these pics got posted….its going to be BADDDD when her boyfriend sees these- http://absenturlforyourprotection/

When I clicked the link (which I was suspicious of), I was asked for my name and password. “.cn” is China’s domain extension if you were unaware. I submitted the email address “bob@aol.com” and the password “asdf”. The login was successful and I was redirected to “facebook.com”.

This means that your facebook account has been compromised and you’re spamming ALL of your friends with this garbage. I don’t know whether a spammer has compromised your account, or it is one of the dozens of crappy third-party applications you’ve apparently randomly added. Either way, most people don’t take kindly to spammers, and it’s unfortunate your account was compromised. You should probably fix the problem and apologize to your friends.

I don’t take kindly to people who (seemingly) cannot take care of their web accounts. Unfriended. I’m don’t think I’m bitter or heartless – I believe I’m pragmatic. Although I understand that the person whose account was used to spam dozens of walls is also a victim of the spamming, I doubt facebook itself is to blame for the access. At this point, the person’s burden overtook their usefulness as an acquaintance.

2007 Resolutions in Review

Last year, before I started this blog, I was an avid Facebook-noter. To clarify, Facebook has a feature called “notes,” which resemble blog posts. On December 31, 2006, while I was feeling motivate, I posted this:

I don’t know what it is, but I’ve felt really good recently, overall. I want to keep the feeling going and have the best year possible, so I’m going to try to stick to a few ‘rules’ (resolutions)…
1. Reduce conflict, be more affable. Just be a better person, socially, and in every way possible.
2. Don’t overreact or under-react to things that happen. As I’ve learned, these things can control you.
3. Get Things Done.
4. Don’t get taken advantage of by anyone.
5. Go after things, get ‘em.
6. Have a little more fun.
7. Eat better.
8. Make backups.

Why am I putting these ‘rules’ on Facebook? Well, now I have a reason to hold myself to them.

Have a great year everyone! :D
Seriously, make it great. Stay safe. Stay happy. Don’t change, unless it’s for the better.

I had some lofty goals, didn’t I? Let’s see how I did. Continue reading ’2007 Resolutions in Review’
